Professor Md. Shafiqul Islam was a professor of NIPSOM. He is professionally a medical doctor with more than 35 years of experience and currently working as a part-time resource person for Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC). He is associated with Bangladesh Institute of Social Research (BISR) Trust as an honorable Trustee.
After obtaining Ph.D. in Epidemiology from University of Cambridge, UK, Professor Md. Shafiqul Islam has served with distinction in different capacities at NIPSOM, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), etc. He worked in several health institutions as a Medical Officer from 1985 to 1996. He was the professor and head of the Department of Epidemiology at NIPSOM in 2016. He served as Senior Monitoring & Data Systems Advisor at the international organization ‘Alive & Thrive’ of the Family Health International from September 2017 to November 2018.
He worked as a researcher for Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in 2009; NCD risk factor survey in 2010 and a ‘Technical Committee’ member of GATS 2017 of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics; Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (MOLGRDC) funded by SIDA. He worked as a temporary advisor for curriculum development of the ‘Field Epidemiology Training Program’ (FETP) of WHO SEARO in India and also worked as a faculty member of FETP for the South East Asian Regional Participants at the NICD, India funded by WHO. He has total 50 publications focusing on the aspects of fertility control intentions and autism spectrum disorders, usage of tobacco, vaccine coverage, communicable and non-communicable diseases, etc. He is the treasurer of the Epidemiological Association of Bangladesh and a member of Bangladesh Network for Urban Health and ‘National Research Ethical Committee’.
