Dr. Jahangir Alam is a renowned agricultural economist with specialization in agricultural and rural development, agribusiness, trade liberalization , income distribution and poverty. He has 45 years experience in research and teaching. He has published 154 books and research papers from reputed international and national organizations. Besides, he has 225 popular publications to his credit.
Dr. Jahangir Alam was born in Brahmanbaria district on 31 December 1952. He obtained B.Sc. Ag.Econ. (Hons.) in 1972 and M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics in 1973 from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh; Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics with specialization in agricultural economics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 1983; and completed Post-Doctoral studies from Lincoln University, New Zealand in 1998. He worked as the Director General of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka from 2006 to 2009 and Member Director (Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council from 2001 to 2006. He worked as an Adjunct Professor at Sher-e- Bangle Agricultural University, Dhaka in the Faculty of Agribusiness Management. He supervises and examines MS and PhD dissertations of Different Universities of the country. He was a Professor of American Independent University, California and supervised PhD students through distance learning. He was holding the position of Vice Chancellor, University of Global Village (UGV) from November 2017 - November 2021.
Dr. Alam is the Former President of Bangladesh Agricultural Economists’ Association. He received several awards including the Ekushe Padak - 2020, Presidential Award for Agricultural Development in 1980, and Dr. S.D Choudhuri Gold Medal given by the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture in 2004 for his outstanding contributions to research in Agricultural and Rural Economics. He is a life member of Bangladesh Economic Association, Bangla Academy, Asiatic Society and Krishibid Institution Bangladesh. He is a columnist and a Freedom Fighter.
